Closing the gender leadership gap requires opening the door early to equitable access

Paradigm for Parity’s Center for Action partners with Girls With Impact to give early career women critical business acumen and leadership skills

How can we best support women who are just getting started on their business careers, or who are considering whether they want to work in the corporate sector to begin with? Two essential and invaluable assets are entrepreneurial mindsets and foundational business acumen. When women gain an early understanding of how to build and lead a business they’re endowed with indispensable wisdom. Coupled with access to coaches and mentors, they experience a model for leadership that they can carry with them and pay forward. This is how we pave a sustainable path to parity.

One of the tenets of the Paradigm for Parity 5-Point Action Plan is that we must identify women of potential and give them sponsors, as well as mentors. Women of all ages—but particularly early and mid-career women—need career sponsors who are willing to provide access to networks of influence and opportunities.

That’s why Paradigm for Parity is partnering with the nonprofit Girls With Impact (GWI), the nation’s only live, online business and leadership organization equipping young women with the skills, tools, and network to succeed in career and beyond. The GWI Business Academy’s core program is a 10-week live, online mini-MBA geared towards pre-career or new-to-career  women, typically ages 18-24 years. The program provides foundational skills necessary to confidently prepare for and advance in careers.

Taught by MBA and MBA-educated professional instructors, the GWI Business Academy program builds foundational and transferable skills through a complete process from creating a business plan to pitching their business. While developing an entrepreneurial mindset, participants in the program gain a holistic understanding of the machinery of business and how each department works.

Over 16,000 women have completed the program to date, 70% of whom have been Black & Hispanic. Program participants have hailed from 30 different countries.

After completing the program, Girls with Impact graduates report:

  • 35% increase in confidence in becoming a leader
  • 47% increase in confidence in public speaking
  • 35% increase in confidence in interviewing skills
  • 79% report an increase in tech skills
  • 93% feel more college-ready
  • 95.5% say they “highly approve” of the quality of the program and its staff/instructors

Paradigm for Parity’s partnership with GWI enables Center for Action member companies to achieve their retention and advancement goals by:

  • Up-Skilling a diverse pipeline that advances diversity to level the field.

Diverse employees often haven’t had the same learning opportunities as others. This program helps remedy that learning access gap and helps prepare them for promotion, thereby enhancing diversity up the pipeline

  • Providing sought-after learning and development

Paradigm for Parity’s own research has found that professional skills development—specifically, public speaking and launching a product or service—ranked  among the top opportunities that would most drive a woman’s confidence in the workplace.

  • Driving retention

When women feel confident and supported in positions that give them continuous opportunities to grow, acquire new skills, and advance in their company, they’re so much likelier to stay. This is especially true of today’s younger generations of employees. For example, studies show that Gen-Z is “happy but always looking.” The happier they are, of course, the less need they feel to look.

The Paradigm for Parity Center for Action partnership with GWI offers member companies exclusive pricing and cohort opportunities of single company or mixed companies. Both offer the powerful benefit of connecting women with each other, strengthening women’s networks in the corporate sector, and fostering peer-to-peer mentorship.
